MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

The mission, intent and purpose of the School Counseling program at Kent State University is to prepare students for employment as professional school counselors in K-12 institutions. The School Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and is approved by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE). Broad objectives of the program include the following:

 

  • Students will have a curricular experience and demonstrated knowledge in: 1) professional identity; 2) social and cultural diversity; 3) human growth and development; 4) career development; 5) helping relationships; 6) group work; 7) assessment; and 8) research and program evaluation.

  • Students will obtain supervised counseling experience that might better meet the personal, social, educational, and vocational needs of children and adolescents in school settings.

  • Students will gain curricular experiences and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the foundations of school counseling. For example:

    • history and philosophy of school counseling;

    • relationship of the school counseling program to the academic and student services program in the school;

    • role, function, and professional identity of school counselors;

    • strategies of leadership designated to enhance the learning environment of schools;

    • knowledge of the school setting;

    • current issues, policies, laws, and legislation relevant to school counseling;

    • issues of diversity in school counseling;

    • knowledge and understanding of community, environmental, and institutional opportunities and barriers;

    • knowledge and application of current and emerging technology; and

    • ethical and legal considerations in school counseling.

  • Students will gain curricular experiences in the contextual dimensions of school counseling that provide an understanding of the coordination of counseling program components as they relate to the school community.

  • Students will also gain curricular experiences and demonstrate knowledge and skills in 1) program development, implementation, and evaluation; 2) counseling and guidance; and 3) consultation.

NOTE: The School Counseling program is approved by the Ohio State Department of Education. Results of the programmatic evaluation are available through the CHDS Program office in 310 White Hall.


 

SCHOOL COUNSELING CURRICULUM

The School Counseling curriculum prepares individuals for beginning employment in K-12 settings as a School Counselor. The Master's of Education (M.Ed.) degree may be earned with a minimum of 49 semester hours of successful graduate work in specified courses.
